Choosing The Right Make-up Artist For Your Wedding Day and What To Expect

Updated: Oct 19, 2019

So today I come across a bride who paid for a “make up artist” to do her make up for one of the most important days in her life, luckily she booked a trial. When this lady sent me the photo of her trial make up I was horrified, there is no way a credible make up artist did that! Yet there is many people offering their services and usually for a very little price calling themselves a make up artist. Unfortunately this isn’t the 1st time I have seen this. So I thought I would right a blog about the importance of booking the right make up artist for your big day.

Firstly, as a bride to be myself I know how much weddings can cost and the importance of staying in budget, that being said its not always cost effective to go for the cheapest option. You will most definitely want a trial run. On the day of your trial run you should be having a conversation with your make up artist of the colour and the theme of your wedding, the looks and styles you like and that you are after and together you create your look, and once that look is complete then tweak it to perfection if it isn’t already there. The morning of your wedding will fly by, you will have people rushing around you and you want everything in place so you can relax and feel pampered. The morning of your wedding is definitely not the time to find out you don’t like the look your make up artist has created or to decide what shade of lipstick you was hoping to wear. On your trial you get the chance to get to know your make up artist, after all she will be sharing the morning of the most special day of your life with you and its important you feel happy and comfortable with her.

What are you really paying for?

There are MANY make up artists out there that have no sales experience but have amazing talent when it comes to make up, so unfortunately you may go for someone else purely based on the fact the one with more make up experience doesn’t have the sales experience to sell her skills to you. A real professional make up artist will have the ability to make the make up last from morning to night without any touch ups ( unless its lipgloss, that will need topping up). There are many different primers out there for many different looks, needs and skin types, they will know what one is best for you. They will also have the eye to colour match the foundation to your skin by mixing if they need to.

There are many make up products particularly with SPF in that will cause a flash back in the photos, you will look stunning in the mirror but cant work out why you look so washed out in the photos? A professional make up artist will know what make up products to use to avoid flashbacks.

Coverage and colour correction! Another thing many brides wouldn’t know to think of is on the day of their wedding they could have had a break out! How awful to wake up on the morning with a breakout – that could be due to a face mask they used the night before ( I don’t recommend this by the way lol) or hormones, or a diet they was using. A professional will know exactly how to cover it and colour correct it.

Just remember, you get what you pay for and I don’t know about you but I think its cheaper paying the extra and getting exactly what you wanted rather then paying less and your make up not last you the whole day.
